Inclusion of the periodontal ligament in studies on the biomechanical behavior of fiber post-retained restorations: An in vitro study and three-dimen…

2016

Endodontically treated teeth are known to have reduced structural strength. Periodontal ligament may influence fracture resistance. The purpose of this study was to assess the influence of including the periodontal ligament in biomechanical studies about endodontically treated and restored teeth. Forty human maxillary central incisors were treated endodontically and randomly divided into four groups: non-crowned (with and without an artificial ligament) and crowned (with and without an artificial ligament) with glass-ceramic crowns. All groups received prefabricated glass-fiber posts and a composite resin core. Specimens were tested, under a flexural–compressive load, until failure occurre…

Analysis of bond strength between a nylon reinforcement structure and dental resins

2021

Made available in DSpace on 2021-06-25T10:30:27Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-05-01 Background: Nylon is a polymer that its use to reinforce dental resins has shown positive results such as increased flexural strength. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bond strength between dental resins and a nylon reinforcement. Material and Methods: Forty cylindrical nylon blocks with 13 x 23 mm with 0.5% by volume of silica and 40 without were made. Half of the samples of each nylon composition were sandblasted with aluminum oxide (50µm) for 3 s (2.8 bar pressure, distance: 20 mm, incidence angle: 90o). On the nylon blocks, cylinders of chemically activated acrylic resin…

Dental research in Spain. A bibliometric analysis on subjects, authors and institutions (1993-2012)

2016

Background Bibliometrics is defined as the use of statistical methods in the analysis of a body of literature to reveal the historical development of subject fields and patterns of authorship, publication, and use. Our objective was to characterize Spanish scientific output in Dentistry through the analysis of Web of Science database in a 20-year period. By means of a bibliometric study documents were statistically analyzed using indicators that showed quantitative and qualitative aspects of the production. Specifically, time course of the scientific production within the time span was analysed, as were the journals where the article was published and the categories of Journal Citation Repo…

Challenges in dental statistics: data and modelling

2022

The aim of this work is to present the reflections and proposals derived from the first Workshop of the SISMEC STATDENT working group on statistical methods and applications in dentistry, held in Ancona (Italy) on 28th September 2011. STATDENT began as a forum of comparison and discussion for statisticians working in the field of dental research in order to suggest new and improve existing biostatistical and clinical epidemiological methods. During the meeting, we dealt with very important topics of statistical methodology for the analysis of dental data, covering the analysis of hierarchically structured and over-dispersed data, the issue of calibration and reproducibility, as well as some…

Challenges in dental statistics: survey methodology topics

2022

This paper gathers some contributions concerning survey methodology in dental research, as discussed during the first Workshop of the SISMEC STATDENT working group on statistical methods and applications in dentistry, held in Ancona on the 28th September 2011.
The first contribution deals with the European Global Oral Health Indicators Development (EGOHID) Project which proposed a comprehensive and standardized system of epidemiological tools (questionnaires and clinical forms) for national data collection on oral health in Europe. The second contribution regards the design and conduct of trials to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of toothbrushes and mouthrinses. Final…

Color Difference Thresholds in Dentistry

2015

Purpose The aim of this prospective multicenter study was to determine 50:50% perceptibility threshold (PT) and 50:50% acceptability threshold (AT) of dental ceramic under simulated clinical settings. Materials and Methods The spectral radiance of 63 monochromatic ceramic specimens was determined using a non-contact spectroradiometer. A total of 60 specimen pairs, divided into 3 sets of 20 specimen pairs (medium to light shades, medium to dark shades, and dark shades), were selected for psychophysical experiment. The coordinating center and seven research sites obtained the Institutional Review Board (IRB) approvals prior the beginning of the experiment. Each research site had 25 observers,…

Evaluation of clinical dental variables to build classifiers to predict celiac disease

2008

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of salivary variables to build statistical models for predicting celiac disease in symptomatic children. Materials and Methods: the study group consisted of 52 children with celiac disease diagnosed by bowel biopsy, grade III or IV (4 to 12 years old, both sexes) and 23 healthy children as a control group. A logistic regression model was applied to evaluate an individual’s belonging to one group or another. The performance of the model was evaluated by the value of area under the ROC curve. The salivary variables included in the model were the concentration of total proteins, calcium, Ca / P molar ratio, buffer capacity and salivary f…
